The Transformative Power of Self-Care

Updated: Mar 24, 2023

Self-care. It's a word often over-used in today's society, taking away the power behind its meaning. Caring for yourself is neither selfish nor fruitless but vital to maintaining a healthy mind and body. As women, we often spend the vast majority of our time caring for others, ensuring their well-being and happiness. While there's no doubt that this role is a gift and privilege, it can often become overwhelming and exhausting. However, many believe that focusing on themselves is a waste of time, or worse, something that takes away from those we love.

This way of thinking couldn't be further from the truth. Only when you allow for self-care can you have the physical and emotional capacity to pour into others. Let's explore how self-care can help you meet not only the needs of others but your own as well.

The Benefits Of Self-Care

For so long, women have ignored their own needs, but times have changed. I encourage you to open your mind to a new perspective on self-care. Studies show that taking care of yourself not only helps you feel better, but it can actually make you live longer! It doesn't stop there; the self-care benefits go even further.

Reduce Stress And Anxiety

I don't know about you, but stress and anxiety are an almost ever-present part of my day. Whether it's taking care of the kids, making dinner, working a full-time job, or a million other responsibilities, it's easy to see why so many women are overwhelmed and anxious. Taking time for self-care allows our bodies to release pent-up emotions, relaxing the muscles and clearing the mind. It gives you time to breathe without worrying about anyone else’s needs.

Increased Self-Esteem

Do you struggle with low self-esteem? What about body issues or feelings of not being good enough? If you are, let me first say you're not alone, and YOU ARE ENOUGH! One of the most notable benefits of self-care is its ability to help you regain your self-esteem and self-worth. When you prioritize self-care, focus your energy inward, and set aside time each day for yourself, you begin training your brain to see your value. You see, we prioritize what matters most and are creatures of habit. If you resolve to practice self-care daily, you will begin seeing yourself as a priority, which, in time, will help transform the way you view yourself and your inherent value.

Healthier Mind And Body

Have you ever noticed that when you're extra stressed, your mind doesn't work the way it should? Maybe you become forgetful or unable to process situations as they arrive. The reason for this is simple (and quite alarming.) Stress and anxiety actually shrink the areas of the brain responsible for memory, emotions, and metabolism. Talk about a threefold puch! So, not only can it make it harder to remember, but you'll also feel moodier and struggle to maintain your weight. I think we can all agree that stress sucks! One of the best ways to combat the adverse effects anxiety brings is through self-care. By allowing yourself to unwind, your brain can rest, which can help stop shrinking and keep your entire body feeling better.

Self-Care Ideas

Okay, now that you know that self-care isn't optional; it's necessary, you may wonder how to do it. You may feel silly not knowing how to relax, but I assure you, we've all been there. The good news is, once you start, you won't want to stop!

Go For A Walk

Let's start slow; why not take a walk outside? Fresh air and sunlight do wonders for your mood, and exercise can help release serotonin and endorphins, two "happy chemicals" that make you feel good. If you can find a natural area, even better; just be sure to stay safe and alert.

Read A Book

Books transport us to another time and place and are an excellent way to help remove us from the day's stresses. Picking up a book can also increase your vocabulary, stimulate neuron processes in the brain, and help relieve muscle tension. It looks like Reading Rainbow was on to something!

Get A Massage

Ok, I could hear the eye roll from here, but bear with me on this one. Massages are an excellent way to relieve body and muscle tension you may not have known you had in a safe and relaxing environment. It gives you the opportunity to have someone else care for you, and the hand-to-skin touch can also release our good friend serotonin. Although some massage services may be on the pricey side, companies often run specials with deep discounts, making them an affordable (and amazing feeling) self-care option.

Take A Bath

Baths are a popular self-care choice for a good reason. The warm water stimulates feelings of comfort and well-being, mimicking the peaceful surroundings in the womb. It also helps relax sore joints and muscles while relieving tension. Try added essential oils or bath salts for an aromatic infusion that will ensure you get the most out of your "me" time.

Talk To A Therapist

Thankfully, mental health care has come a long way, and seeking help is not only accepted but encouraged! Speaking to a therapist helps you address underlying issues that may play a part in adding to your daily stress and anxiety. It allows you to release your emotions, fears, concerns, and more in a safe, non-judgmental environment.
